BERKLEY, FAMILY FIRST AND THE KNOWLEDGE CHANNEL: EMPOWERING THE YOUTH THROUGH EDUCATION

Recent studies have shown that modern technology, particularly the audio-visual medium of television, greatly helps in the absorption and retention of new information especially among young children. With this, Berkley International Plans, Inc., with its marketing arm, Family First, Inc., partnered with the Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI) for the provision of cable and access to the Knowledge Channel to a total of eight (8) public schools in Metro Manila, namely, Ramon Magsaysay, Culiat, Sauyo and Tomas Morato Elementary Schools in Quezon City and Pamplona Central, Daniel Fajardo, Manuyo and Pulang Lupa Elementary Schools in Las Piñas. The cabling is seen to improve the quality of education and teaching for the marginalized youth in the said areas.

Under the partnership, Berkley and Family First will finance the installation of television sets in the public schools as well as a 3-year subscription to the cable network. The grant will allow educational programs like Hirayamanawari, Sineskwela, Epol Apol, Newton's Apple, World of Wonders, and Bayani/Pamana to be viewed by elementary kids. The public school teachers, for their part, may access entertaining discussions on new and better methods of teaching Algebra, Chemistry, Physics and General Science through the series known as Continuing Studies Via Television or CONSTEL.

The partnership further provides that KCFI will monitor and report to Berkley and Family First the usage of the television sets and improvements in the over-all education of the beneficiary schools. It also allows Berkley and Family First to participate in the program called Teacher-for-a-Day, where employees from both companies may conduct hands-on teaching in the school sites.
