WHAT DO CHILDREN DREAM ABOUT? They think of growing up and being like their parents, or their elder brothers and sisters. They think, “maybe I’ll be a doctor... lawyer... teacher... policeman.” They call their playmates over for role-playing games portraying their dreams. Fortunately for children they have only the smallest understanding of what it will take to achieve their dreams. Otherwise they might do what we grown-ups do. And that is: worry. It’s up to you, their parents, to carry through for them. And for that, we all could learn a thing or two.

For one: These days you better know that tuition fee increases are inevitable. Our charts show that in a period of five years, grade school and high school tuition fees in Metro Manila can easily increase up to 50% (usually even more). Last year, we featured another chart which displayed college tuition fee increases, sadly, the numbers showed yearly increases of up to 15%. In an article that appeared in the Philippine Star (5/31/00), Representative Antonio Nachura revealed that 315 private colleges and universities nationwide hiked their tuition fee, with some adjustments amounting to 50% in one year.

Then there is the problem of quality education. Risk sending your children to schools of low quality and you might have a graduate who has difficulty passing professional licensure exams and getting a job. The problem is you need more money to get higher quality education.

And, to complicate matters, as we noted in our article last year: “There are other expenses such as clothes, uniforms, school supplies, books, allowance, lunches and school contributions which also increase. These expenses account for around 30% of the cost of tertiary education.”

With skyrocketing tuition fee increases and basic fees as well as other school-related expenses, it is a wonder how Filipinos get their children through school!

Fortunately, you have more choices than just to sit and pull your hair with worry. One choice you can make is to get educational plans from Family First. Help your child make her dreams come true! Don’t let her play-acting be mere child’s play. Give her the reality of her dream. Years from now you can see her in her toga marching down the aisle to receive her diploma. And maybe even being awarded a medal or two!

It can happen.

All you have to do is plan for your children’s future today—with an educational plan from Family First.
